Message from the president….

Greetings new and returning NEF TESOL Members!

I hope everyone’s new academic year has gotten off to a great start.  There seems to be a lot of changes in the

fall air for both Adult and K-12 programs. So, what better way to find out what happening on all fronts than by

coming to the NEF Fall Conference on November 4, 2007?  Please see the Fall Conference flyer for details

which is enclosed in this newsletter.   It’s an excellent opportunity for learning the latest trends in teaching

reading, networking and meeting other ESOL professionals, seeing publishers’ materials, and getting to visit

with friends. Please mark your calendars and share the NEF Fall Conference flyer with your colleagues.

No R.S.V.P. is needed, so just come!

The fall Conference is also the time when the new NEF Board is installed for 2007 – 2008.

This is a special year because it marks 15 years that NEF TESOL has been a chapter.

The new Board Members for 2007 – 2008 are:

President:          Pat Randall

Treasurer:         Betty Green

Secretary:         Vacant

Support:            Betsy Gaura

Webmaster:      Jose A. Carmona

If you are interested in serving on the NEF Board, we do need a Secretary as this position is vacant.

Also, we need additional Members-at-Large.  Please come to the Fall Conference and contact Pat Randall

or me if you would like to serve in one of these capacities.

I would like to say thanks in advance to the current board for their contributions and hard work in preparing

for the upcoming conference.  NEF TESOL could not have reached the milestone of 15 years without your

continued support and participation.

Florida Community College at Jacksonville’s Update

Both the Adult ESOL and EAP Programs are experiencing growth in student enrollments.

The New American’s Program has grown as well and is assisting newcomers in getting placed

and enrolled in credit and non-credit classes at FCCJ.

The Adult ESOL Program is piloting the new Sunshine State Standards curriculum this fall term

during C Session.  The new curriculum will be required in 2008.

There is a link on the Florida Adult ESOL’s webpage to view the Pilot.

http://www.floridaadultesol.org/  Click on Pilot Curriculum under the “Spotlight”.

FCCJ is also planning activities for International Education Week which begins on November 5, 2007.

Planned activities are International Poetry readings with international coffees and pastries, international films,

international dance and vocal performances, and informational sessions.  These activities are enjoyed by all

students at FCCJ, and give the students and the local community an opportunity to learn more about other

cultures and languages.
